It is really great to see one of the great old pubs back in business and thriving. The Wooden House in Kilmore Quay in County Wexford, has had a bit of a chequered history over the years, but it is certainly back to its best at the moment.

The pub as the ‘then and now’ pic shows has been vastly improved since we visited as part of our research in the 1990’s. The slate roof has been completely replaced and they have gone the ‘retro’ route and installed an entirely new thatched roof. The whole bar has been renovated and improved. The back of the pub was re-developed into an apartment/holiday apartment/ apart-hotel complex with 9 ensuite rooms adjoined to the pub and 10 separate own door holiday apartments. Re-development  was carried out during the ‘Celtic-Tiger’ years, seemingly, with no expense spared. But unfortunately like so many other businesses during that period, they got caught in the ‘perfect storm’ where costs were higher and then recession came at just the wrong time.

It is located close to the quays and strand in the tiny fishing and tourist village of Kilmore Quay in Co. Wexford. A landmark pub well known for its seafood restaurant, it was closed for about a year until the current owners took the brave decision to reopen it in 2012.

The accompanying press clippings show some of the asking-price madness of the boom years, and the astounding prices being quoted for what was essentially a seasonal business in a picturesque but relatively remote location.

The pub is thriving at the moment under new ownership, and with the good weather it is sure to be a busy spot this summer.
